Thursday afternoon I took my son to the headache specialist in SF. (Prognosis: We can fix this, let's try some new drugs.)

Friday morning I went to my son's school principal, a wonderful woman, to discuss how to avoid repeating ninth grade. Her response, repeated, was "The first thing is for him to get well. That's the most important thing." Prognosis: There are ways to make up the 12 missing credits, during his sophomore year if summer school isn't an option. He's registered for summer school just in case. In the parking lot, I discovered a possible disaster, which wasn't proven false until I talked to my son at home.

After the meeting I realized that I was completely wiped out. I couldn't even read with comprehension. The last two days had used up all my brain. So I did the smart thing and took another day off work. On my way home, I drove to the lovely Carlmont Nursery, which is hidden in the Lunardi's mall. It dates to the 1960s and has a magnificent water feature running through the garden, channeling a local creek and plashing over waterfalls and through the Japanese maples, their specialty. The gardener who talked to me said that people often had weddings in the top deck overlooking the waterfall; she also happily pointed out to me all the ferns that had self-seeded, a sure sign that the habitat was right. "We couldn't put in something like this today."
